How to read an engine oil label: SAE, API and ACEA explained

Most engine oil bottles carry three separate pieces of technical information, and they answer three different questions. Read in the right order, they tell you whether an oil suits your engine far more reliably than any claim on the front of the label.

SAE viscosity grade — how the oil flows

The SAE grade is set by the SAE J300 standard, and on a multigrade oil it looks like 10W-40. The number before the W (for winter) describes how the oil behaves when cold: a lower number means it stays thinner at low temperature and reaches the engine's moving parts faster on a cold start. The number after the dash describes viscosity at operating temperature, around 100 °C.

A 5W-30 and a 15W-40 are not interchangeable simply because both are multigrade. They are two different cold-flow and hot-film specifications, and an engine designed for one is not automatically happy with the other.

API service category — what the oil is formulated for

The American Petroleum Institute classifies oils into two families. Categories beginning with S are for spark-ignition engines — petrol. Categories beginning with C are for compression-ignition engines — diesel. The second letter advances as the standard is revised, so a later letter generally reflects a newer specification.

This is the code that tells you what the additive package was designed to cope with: deposit control, wear protection, oxidation resistance, and in diesel categories, soot handling.

ACEA sequence — the European view

ACEA, the European automobile manufacturers' association, publishes its own oil sequences. They overlap with API in intent but test against different criteria, and European vehicles frequently specify an ACEA sequence rather than — or in addition to — an API category. If your vehicle was built for the European market, this line on the label often matters more than the API one.

Which one decides?

None of them, on their own. The decision belongs to the engine manufacturer, and it is written in the owner's manual or the service handbook: a required viscosity grade, a minimum service category or ACEA sequence, and sometimes a named OEM approval on top of both. The label's job is to let you confirm that an oil meets what the manual already asked for.

Match the manual first, then the label. An oil that exceeds a specification your engine does not use is not automatically the better choice.

Operating conditions matter alongside the codes. Sustained high ambient temperature, heavy loads, long idling periods and dusty air all shorten the useful life of a given oil, which is a drain-interval question rather than a grade question.
